A group of Wisconsin high school students face disciplinary actions after taunting Latina soccer players with racial slurs and chants of "Donald Trump, build that wall."

Two teenage and three elementary-aged students yelled the derogatory comments during a girls' soccer game in the rural town of Elkhorn last Thursday, prompting team coaches to step in and console the players.

"I could just see the hurt and pain on their faces and know that this was obviously something that hadn't seen before," said Beloit Memorial coach Brian Denu, speaking with CBS affiliate WISC-TV. "You know, it was from a small pocket of the Elkhorn fans, but those words are things you can't take back."

In a statement, Elkhorn District Administrator Jason Tadlock said the high school students shouted "Trump" back-and-forth at least four times, adding that one student yelled "you suck" at a Beloit player after the player allegedly made an inappropriate gesture toward spectators.

"This is not acceptable and as a district we will address the behavior of those responsible, but will not release specifics of student disciplinary action taken," Tadlock said. "We apologize to the Beloit players, fans, and community that were hurt and offended by the comments and words of a few of our students."

Students Repeating Trump's Language

Trump, the enigmatic Republican presidential candidate atop many national polls, campaigns on a promise to build a fortified wall along the U.S.-Mexico border at the Mexican government's expense. The hardline stance alienated minorities and left-leaning voters, but drew avid support from conservatives yearning for an answer to undocumented immigration.

The message resonated in violence during Trump rallies and campaign stops, and it drew adolescents outside of Wisconsin to deliver similar xenophobic comments.

On Feb. 22, minority students in Des Moines, Iowa were inundates with "USA" and "Trump" chants during a high school basketball game. School district officials apologized for the behavior and reached out to advocacy groups, including the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Less than a week later, teenagers at an Indiana high school shouted "build a wall" at basketball players with predominately Latino Bishop Noll Institute. The incendiary students reportedly waved enlarged photos of Trump during the game.

Trump Unfavorable Among Latinos

Despite his large delegate lead over Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump's popularity among Republican voters is waning.

Cruz won each of the GOP's last three state elections - one primary and two caucuses - outright, including the April 5 Wisconsin primary which took place just two days before the Elkhorn incident.

Latinos, in general, hold contempt for Trump.

A Public Religion Research Institute/ The Atlantic poll released last week found 83 percent of Hispanic registered voters view Trump unfavorably, including 66 percent who hold a very unfavorable view. Nearly half - 51 percent - viewed Cruz in the same light.
