Popular Telenovela Villain to Make a Comeback Thanks to 'Orange Is The New Black'
Considered one of the most popular villains in Mexican telenovelas, Soraya Montenegro, played by Itatí Cantoral, will be making a special appearance for the hit Netflix series "Orange Is The New Black.
On June 11, Cantoral confirmed that she will playing the role of Montenegro, who was the villain in "María La Del Barrio," for a promotional scene for Season 4 of the hit show.
She will recreate the popular scene where she has a psychotic breakdown and attacks a girl in a wheelchair, a character that will be reprised by Adriana Welter, and stabs another character.
“It’s incredible! Because they are going to put the most important Mexican villain, Soraya, in jail,” Cantoral explained. “They are going to adapt the role to the series tone and will make her a murderer.”
The popularity of the the character has grown thanks to social media. Millennials have been using screenshots from the telenovela to create memes, which has had a positive effect on Cantoral.
“I am very grateful for this character because it allows newer generations to know who I am thanks to this social media boom, and I’ve been receiving many job offers because of it," she said.
Season 4 of "Orange Is The New Black," which stars a diverse cast, including Latinas Dascha Polanco, Diane Guerrero, Jackie Cruz, Selenis Leyva and Jessica Pimentel, will premiere on June 17.
