Mexico City may have recently been plagued by a serial killer after the city's police stated they are investigating a possible serial murder of around 20 women after authorities discovered bones, a saw, blood, and the ID cards of missing women inside the room the suspect was renting.

While Mexico City police did not officially identify the suspected serial killer, they identified him by his first name, Miguel, which the media later identified as 39-year-old pharma chemist Miguel Cortes. Investigators found shocking evidence inside his apartment that "clearly indicates we are looking at a possible serial killer of women."

Mexico City Prosecutor Ulises Lara told reporters that when searching for evidence inside the possible serial killer's apartment, detectives found "biological material," though the Associated Press noted that he did not specify what that is. Authorities also found blood stains, bones, a saw, cell phones, and missing women's ID cards.

However, Lara admitted that the most chilling thing they found was "a series of notebooks that may well be narrations of the acts that Miguel carried out against his victims."

The prosecutor did not mention how many sets of bones or ID cards had been found, but local media reports indicated that the number may have ranged between 7-20 possible victims.

Possible Mexico City Serial Killer Captured and Beaten Up by Neighbors After Killing a 17-Year-Old

As to how the suspected serial killer was captured, The Daily Mail reported that the suspected serial killer attacked 17-year-old Maria Jose and her mother while she was preparing to leave for school. Cortes reportedly sexually assaulted her, but this was discovered by her mother. The suspect stabbed the teen before also stabbing the mother. Maria died, and her mother was hospitalized.

This was all captured on security cameras, and the suspected serial killer tried to flee. However, his escape was thwarted by several neighbors who ganged up on Cortes and beat him up. They then held him until police arrived, leading to the raid on Cortes's apartment where police made the grisly discovery.

"The individual could have entered the said home to sexually assault the victim and deprive her of her life," a statement from the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office read. "The man, possibly discovered by a person, also attacked her, causing various injuries that required the victim's hospitalization."

Mexico City Has a History of Serial Killers

Miguel Cortes, if he does turn out to be a serial killer, would not be the first to have made Mexico City his hunting grounds as the city has been a haven for the authorities there, lacking the proper funding, training, or professionalism to tackle such cases.

The most recent case before this was in 2021, where 19 bodies were found hacked up and buried inside the house. In a 2018 case, a serial killer responsible for the deaths of at least 10 women was caught only after he was found pushing a dismembered body down the street, according to Yahoo! News.
