Android L Release Date & Preview: Google's Largest Operating System Could Come in October for Nexus and Samsung Devices
Although nothing is confirmed about Android's plans for its new software and future updates, rumors suggest that the Android L Operating System could be released sometime in late October for the Nexus and other high-end devices.
While no official announcements have been made regarding the matter, the unnamed release, which is currently called "Android L," could be the biggest Android version in the operating system's history.
According to Christian Today, it will be packed with over 5,000 new APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). This isn't even the final number as developers could reveal more surprises in the final build of the anticipated update.
Previous speculations have suggested that the Android L would be released alongside the pure Android devices Nexus 6 and/or Nexus 8 but the development of those products is now in doubt. Based on last year's release of the Android 4.4 KitKat around late November, the next OS could be rolled out sometime between October and November of this year.
One of the main considerations of the new Android L is the improved general user interface, according to a presentation by the Google's Android Team in last month's I/O Developers' Conference. Based on what they call "Material Design," the new design will feature a flat interface.
Meanwhile, there are also those who believe that Android L may not be rolling out anytime soon due to the high turnover of gadgets, which makes updates more difficult for the developers. For example, 41 different Android smartphones were released by Samsung in 2013 alone, according to Android Origin.
Managing different devices is already hard as it is and taking software updates into consideration makes it even more difficult. However, this problem may be focused on Samsung alone since the other developers do not produce as much as the Korean manufacturer does, allowing them to concentrate on their flagships and other secondary offerings.
