Police are still searching for the person or people responsible for the shooting of two state troopers outside a rural Pennsylvania barracks, killing one and injuring the other. Officers from three states are looking for the gunman.

The ambush occurred outside the State Police Barracks in Blooming Grove, a town of nearly 4,000 people roughly 35 miles east of Scranton. The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Friday according to State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan.

"This has been an emotional night for all for us," he told ABC News.

Noonan said the culprits shot at the officers as they were changing shifts at the barracks. Police did not give a description of the gunman.

"We can't say that the situation is completely in hand," Noonan added.

Authorities from eastern Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey are now all searching for the guilty individuals. Noonan also said that police didn't believe that the public was in danger and the crime seemed directed at state police, but are still asking everyone to be aware of any suspicious persons.

The injured state police trooper was sent to Geisinger Medical Center in Scranton, and Noonan said he is in stable condition.

In the hours after the shooting and into Saturday morning several roads and portions of Interstate 84 surrounding the barracks were closed.

Adam Reed, a state trooper and police spokesman, said the barracks in Blooming Grove cover much of Pike County along the Delaware River and New York and New Jersey borders. The area is wooded and near large state game lands.

"There's a lot of rural area up where they patrol," he said. "As the primary police force in the county, they're going to respond to anything and everything."
