One person is dead and 22 others are injured after a hayride Halloween attraction in Maine flipped over.

A teenage girl was killed Saturday when a trailer carrying the group flipped over on a steep dirt road at Pumpkin Land theme park in Mechanic Falls, reported NECN.com.

The driver and a teenage boy were seriously injured but are expected to survive, while the remaining injured were sent to area hospitals following the tragic accident.

State Police are inspecting the jeep, which was pulling the trailer, for mechanical issues that may have caused the accident.

Authorities said the small jeep was pulling the flatbed trailer and missed a turn on the steep dirt road, causing the jeep to go off the road and the trailer to hit a tree, which is how the riders were injured from the tumble to the ground.

Though theme parks and attractions require licensing and inspection from a Fire Marshall in order to operate, hayrides are exempt, NECN.com reported.

The Facebook page for Harvest Hill Farms/Pumpkin Land posted the message of the accident at 10 p.m. Saturday, announcing that emergency crews were on site.

An hour later, the Facebook page was updated with a post, "The accident occurred at the Gauntlet Haunted Night ride, a separate venue from Pumpkin Land, our daytime Family Fall venue. However Pumpkin Land will be closed Sunday, while authorities investigate the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured."

Some visitors who were at the theme park when the accident occurred added their own posts, including one whose family were on the ride.

"My son and his pregnant girlfriend and a bunch of their friends were on that ride. Thank God they are okay," Penny Peare said, according to NECN.com.

Helicopters were called to the scene, in addition to on-the-ground emergency personnel including firefighters, ambulances and police officers.
