Fox 'Glee' Season 6 News: Mexico Version 'Candela' to Be Similar to 'Rebelde'
"Glee" may be coming to an end, but a show inspired by the Fox series is heading to Mexico.
Melty reports that a Latin version of the show will be called "Candela." Sheryl Rubio and Vadhir Derbez are set to star in the show, according to El Mañana.
The name of the show comes from the main character, who is portrayed by Rubio, and the show will soon start recording in Miami. El Mañana did not give any more details about where the series was airing, but Radio Formula said that the series has already been sold in many countries.
"Candela" would not be the first Latino musical show. "Rebelde" was a very popular show aired in the mid-aughts. Unlike "Glee," characters did not break out into song and dance in "Rebelde." Instead, a few of the students, who attended a boarding school, were trying to form a group.
Derbez said he thinks of the show as more of a hybrid of "Rebelde" and "Glee."
"I imagine they will do something similar to 'Glee,' though maybe not the 'I am in scene and I'm going to sing' type of scene but something very similar," Derbez said, according to Reforma. "They want to a sort of 'Rebelde-Glee' mashup."
"Rebelde" ran from 2004 to 2006, and the cast members are supposed to reunite.
The show's producer, Pedro Damian, said the group will get together for dinner.
"We're going to dinner," he said, according to TV Notas. "That's going to be important. We haven't seen each other. Each person is working in their own world. We continue to care and love each other as a group who worked incredibly together."
Damian said that even if the former group members can't constantly see each other, they do keep in touch.
