The crowded movie season begins this week as three new wide releases will open alongside seven specialty films.

Weekly Highlights

"The Visit" - Two years after the debacle of "After Earth," M. Night Shyamalan returns with his first found footage film "The Visit." The new film tells the story of two young children who visit their grandparents when their mother finds that things in her family's life are wrong. The movie is being promoted as Shyamalan's comeback after a series of disappointing and mediocre films. The director also noted that he scaled the budget on the film and shot it in secret. Universal has not used Shyamalan's name in the trailers and stressed the director's earlier films as well Blumhouse productions, which has created some of the most recent horror franchises. With a lack of horror flicks currently in theaters this film could attract horror fans. However, if the reviews are negative, it is likely the movie could flop.

"The Perfect Guy" - The new film by David M. Rosenthal tells the story of a professional woman who gets involved with a man who seems almost too good to be true. The film will be released by Sony with little marketing. However, the company is promoting it as the next "No Good Deeds" and "Obsessed." Both those movies went on to score formidable box offices and became cult classics amongst the demographic. Expect the movie to open with at least $13 million.

Other Releases

Samuel Goldwyn will follow up the success of "War Room" with yet another faith based film. "90 Minutes in Heaven" will open in wide release and features "Star Wars" actor Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth. Limited marketing has been done for the film but the Bible belt will most likely be aware of the movie.

Two Foreign film Oscar contenders will also open hoping to stand out at the box office. Austria's "Goodnight Mommy" will open in New York and L.A. The film which premiered at Venice and Toronto is coming off a successful run in Europe, and Radius TWC hopes to attract horror fans as well as Academy voters. The movie has scored rave reviews and is the alternative to those not interested in "The Visit."

Sony will open China's submission "Wolf Totem" in 100 theaters. The movie has been picking up steam throughout the weeks and could surprise at the box office if buzz remains strong. However, reviews are currently mixed, which could hurt the film's chances at scoring a foreign film nomination.

Melanie Laurent's film "Breathe" will also open via Film Movement while Sony Pictures Classics will release Gong Li's "Coming Home." Both movies premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews.

IFC Films will release Richard Gere's "Time Out of Mind," which is garnering rave reviews for Gere but mixed for the film. The company is also releasing "Sleeping with Other People" after a successful run at the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Both films will be available on VOD and in theaters.

Other releases include "Paul Taylor: Creative Domain" and "Listening."
