La Liga Week 3 Standings & Table: Barcelona Remains Perfect, Real Madrid Get 5 Goals From Cristiano Ronaldo
What a week of Spanish league soccer it was.
It appears as if talk of Cristiano Ronaldo's "goal slump" was greatly exaggerated. After not scoring a single goal in his first two matches, Ronaldo had a game for the ages in Week 3. Ronaldo scored an incredible five goals against Espanyol in a 6-0 blowout.
What's more, Ronaldo has overtaken the great Raúl for most La Liga goals in franchise history. Ronaldo now has 318 career goals for Real Madrid, just five behind Raúl for the most ever. What is so incredible about this is the fact that Ronaldo has played less than half the amount of games for Real Madrid than Raúl has. With that lopsided victory, Real Madrid improved their overall record to two wins and one draw giving them seven points.
Real Madrid is currently in second place, and they will play Granada at home next week.
Real Madrid may have won their game 6-0, but it was Barcelona who stayed perfect over the weekend. Barcelona had a tough game against Atletico Madrid, and they answered beautifully with a road win. Barcelona is now 3-0, the only undefeated team in the league.
Atletico Madrid took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute thanks to a goal from Fernando Torres, but the defending league champions wouldn't give up. Neymar lit the lamp in the 55th minute of play, and Lionel Messi scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
Barcelona wins 2-1.
Some fans have been critical of Barcelona's lack of goal scoring, but they have been incredible so far at keeping the ball out of the net. Despite scoring just four goals in the opening three games, Barcelona has allowed just one goal. Barcelona and Real Madrid have allowed a combined one goal thus far, and it's pretty obvious these two squads once again stand above the rest. Ronaldo scored five goals in Week 2, but Messi may very well have scored the "goal of the week" with his clutch game-winner.
Barcelona will play Levante in their next game at home.
Real Madrid and Barcelona will not face off until Week 12 in later November, but soccer fans everywhere are counting the days. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, Colombian middle fielder James Rodriguez will be out for some time because of a muscle tear in his knee, and his return is not yet known. His replacement, Isco, will have to step up in Rodriguez's absence.
It's still very early, but the biggest surprise thus far has been Eibar. Eibar finished a dreadful 18th overall with just nine wins last season. Already this year, Eibar has two wins and one draw. Newly acquired middle fielder, Adrián González Morales, leads Eibar in goals scored this year so far. Eibar will be in for a tough task next week against Atletico Madrid, and soccer fans will see just how good this club really is.
