Anahí and Angélica Rivera Criticized Over Expensive Designer Gowns Worn to Celebrate Mexican Independence Day
Mexican citizens are upset that the first lady of Mexico, actress Angélica Rivera, and the first lady of Chiapas, singer Anahí, are spending money on expensive dresses while the country experiences a financial crises.
Anahí, who is married to the Mayor of Chiapas, Manuel Velasco Coello, made headlines when she wore a really expensive designer gown to celebrate Mexican Independence day on Sept. 16.
According to RPP News, the singer shared several images from the event on her Instagram account of the green dress, worth $7,000.
While the singer and actress has earned her own fortune from her music and work on telenovelas, many considered her choice to wear the dress insensitive since she is no longer just a pop star but a face of Mexican leadership.
Like Anahí, Rivera also received criticism for her own dress choice for the same event.
Rivera, who is married to President Enrique Peña Nieto, wore an ivory dress created by Mexican fashion designed Alejandro Carlin, for the Mexican Independence Day celebration. The dress is reportedly worth between $4,000 and $6,000, reported Regeneracion.
With Mexico currently struggling financially, many found Rivera's choice of such an expensive gown to be of poor taste. However, this isn't the first time the Mexican first lady was criticized for her financial choices.
Last year she wore an $8,000 dress, and over the last year she has faced controversy over a $7 million mansion she brought from a firm that had reportedly won contracts with the president's administration, reported Daily Mail.
Rivera eventually returned the mansion, which she claimed to have brought with her own money, after the investigations lead to various doubts about her husbands role. When speaking to the media in August she mentioned that she had nothing to hide.
"I don't want this to continue to be a pretext to offend or defame my family," Rivera said, according to NPR.
