Huawei Mate 8 Release Date & Specs: 'Galaxy Note 5 Killer' Launches This Week
Huawei will finally release the highly-anticipated Mate 8 phablet this week.
According to TechnologyNewsExtra, Huawei smartphone division head Gang He has confirmed that the large-screen handset will go on sale in China starting this Wednesday, Dec. 9. The executive added that one million units will be manufactured each month since the OEM has high-level of confidence in the device.
It can be remembered that the Ascend Mate 7 sold seven million units in one year. Huawei seems sure that the figure could be eclipsed with the Mate 8.
Dubbed as the "Galaxy Note 5 Killer," the Kirin 950-powered Mate 8 posted an impressive score of 94,250 on AnTuTu, per AndroidHeadlines. To put that in perspective, the Galaxy S6 Edge and the Note 5 respectively garnered scores of 70,053 and 69,465.
The Mate 8 comes with a six-inch LCD screen that displays images in 1080 x 1920 resolution. The handset will be available in two memory variants. These are 3GB RAM with 32GB native storage and 4GB of RAM with 64GB native storage. The former is priced at the equivalent of $470 while the latter is at $1,075.
In the camera department, there's a 16-megapixel back camera that features OIS, a Sony IMX298 sensor and an aperture of f/2.0. The front-facing unit is an eight-megapixel camera with a Sony IMX179 sensor and an aperture of f/2.4. The lights are kept on by a 4,000 mAh battery.
A couple of days before the Mate 8 was officially unveiled last month, fans got their first look at the handset via a raft of leaked photos from China, GforGames reported.
One image confirmed the placement of the fingerprint sensor below the Mate 8's back camera. The camera lens was shown to have a metal ring around it. Furthermore, two speaker grilles could be found at the bottom edge of the handset while the screen is protected with 2.5D glass covering.
From this angle, the Mate 8 looks to employ the same material featured on other high-end Huawei offerings. Another photo suggested that the device will come in four color variants namely gray, gold, copper and black.
GSMArena has since confirmed that the official colors are Space Gray, Champagne Gold, Moonlight Silver and Mocha Brown.
This year has already seen the release of the Huawei Mate S and Nexus 6P. The latest entry to the Mate lineup featured an almost bezel-less 5.5-inch AMOLED screen and the Kirin 935 SoC on board. Meanwhile, Google's Nexus phablet sports a bigger 5.7-inch screen capable of a QHD resolution display.
