‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Cast: Directors Explain Why Daredevil & Jessica Jones Won’t Be in the Film
The success of "Jessica Jones" and "Daredevil" on Netflix is a remarkable feat for the small screen players. Since both have amassed a huge fanbase, along with the Marvel Cinema Universe first television project "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," many have been wondering if it's possible for the television characters to make the jump to the big screen, in particular, the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War."
According to a report from Comic Book Movie, co-director Anthony Russo revealed the challenges in logistics and rights might have been too much to overcome to bring everyone in the new MCU "Avengers" film.
"It's complicated," he admitted in an interview with Super Interessante at CCXP. "When we start to serialize the telling of stories it's difficult. You have to have a lot of control and focus on the course of history. The films are controlled by a group led by Kevin Feige, so they function as a unit. Other products, even if they are from Marvel, are controlled by others."
Russo continued, "Then there is the possibility of a crossover, but it's more complicated. It is a smaller scale version of the problem that exists when remembering that Fox holds the rights to some of Marvel's most popular characters, as does Sony and others. As storytellers, we only have control over what happens in Marvel movies, but everything is possible, 'Spider-Man' (whose rights were held by Sony) became possible!"
It seems the television universe and the film one will be functioning separately for now, although they are part of one big MCU and constantly reference each other such as Phil Coulson's character, who was originally a part of the early "Avengers" films before making the jump to "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
With such a massive world to keep track of, there's always buzz about crossovers among the films, shows and characters of the MCU. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is currently in production, but contrary to some of the speculation surrounding the sequel, it will not be connected with the new "Avengers: Infinity War."
Director James Gunn addressed the rumors in a Facebook Q&A via Cinema Blend saying, "I'm a lot more concerned with Vol. 2 than I am with 'Infinity Wars'. The way the movie [Vol. 2] is structured and made - it really is a story unto itself. It's not about leading up to anything else. It's about the Guardians and their lives."
"Avengers: Infinity War Part 1" will be in theaters on May 4, 2018, while "Avengers: Infinity War Part 2" is currently on pace to launch on May 3, 2019.
