Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush seems to think Donald Trump is the result of a "vast left-wing conspiracy" to get Hillary Clinton elected to the White House -- or at least, he is using the theory to try to gain some traction in the crowded field of GOP presidential candidates.

"Maybe Donald negotiated a deal with his buddy @HillaryClinton," the former Florida governor wondered on social media on Tuesday. "Continuing this path will put her in the White House," the brother of former President George W. Bush and son of former President George H.W. Bush wrote.

Bush's quip was a response to Trump's suggestion that he might run as an independent candidate if Republican heavyweights continue to slam him on his proposals. It comes after a USA Today poll showed that 68 percent of his supporters would still back the real estate tycoon, even if he were to leave the GOP.

While admitting that the whole theory "sounds like something from 'House of Cards,'" The Washington Post's Justin Moyer noted that there is actually some circumstantial "evidence" backing Bush's claim. Trump used to be a Democrat, invited Bill and Hillary Clinton to his 2005 wedding, which they attended, and has donated at least $105,000 to the power couple's foundation -- a point seized upon by Rand Paul, one of Trump's White House rivals.

"You've donated to several Democratic candidates. You explained away those donations saying you did that to get business-related affairs," the Kentucky senator complained during a recent GOP presidential debate. "And you said recently, quote, 'When you give, they do whatever the hell you want them to do.'"

"You better believe it," Trump countered, according to The Washington Post.

All ties between Trump and the Clintons aside, most analysts believe Bush's comments are aimed at grabbing some headlines, as the former governor is struggling with poor results in national polls. In a CNN/ORC poll released on Friday, for instance, the Floridian garnered the support of just 3 percent of Republican voters.
