UFC: Holly Holm's Manager Wants Miesha Tate, Dana White Says Wait for Ronda Rousey
The rematch between UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey are currently in the works, but the camp of the champion wants to stay active while waiting for Rousey to recover from her injuries. According to Holm's manager and promoter, Lenny Fresquez, they would like a match against No. 1 contender Miesha Tate.
"Holly's used to staying active. We're from the old school, and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. Miesha Tate deserves a shot, but it's not for me to decide. We'd like to fight Miesha. We understand there are risks, but Holly's a dominant champion, and she wants to fight the best. Right now, Miesha is the best," Fresquez told the Los Angeles Times.
Tate expected a third fight against Rousey after earning a win over Jessica Eye last July, but the UFC opted for a Rousey-Holm bout at UFC 193. We all know what happened in that fight and Tate has been using Twitter to get a fight with the newly crowned champion.
However, UFC President Dana White told the Los Angeles Times that it will be Rousey who Holm fights next at UFC 200 in July. He added that "Rowdy" will be cleared and ready to go by then to avenge her first loss.
"Ronda is the fiercest competitor I have ever met in my life and she's also very proud. What made the world love Ronda is that Ronda absolutely 100 [percent] knew she was not going to lose. People rallied around this powerful female figure," White said.
"Ronda's never lost a fight. She will overcome it and be back," he added.
FOX Sports noted that negotiations for the rematch are still ongoing and both sides are working on a new contract and an agreement for Holm's next fight. It's unclear whether the UFC will listen to the request of Holm's camp to fight Tate due to the importance of UFC 200.
The event is projected to be the biggest event in the history of the UFC and is set to be held on July 9, 2016 at Las Vegas' new state of the art arena that is scheduled to open in April 2016, per MMA Fighting. The new facility is called the Las Vegas Arena and is being constructed behind the New York, New York casino with a 20,000 seating capacity.
