CM Punk Debut: Another UFC Fighter Challenges Former WWE Champion
A lot of fans are still waiting for WWE superstar turned UFC fighter Phil "CM Punk" Brooks for his debut in 2016 and he still has no opponent set. Another UFC fighter, John "Doomsday" Howard, called out CM Punk and wants to be the first to get his hands on the former WWE champion.
Howard adds to the list of people that wants to fight Punk, including the recently retired Cathal Pendred, FOX Sports MMA writer Elias Cepeda, "The Green Power Ranger" Jason David Frank and former NFL linebacker Shawn Merriman, per MMA News.
"Phil Brooks got a pass to the UFC because of his notoriety. Maybe he is a legit caliber UFC fighter, but I want to be the guy he fights to prove he belongs in the UFC. I'm smaller than him. He's a middleweight and I'm a welterweight, but I'll come up in weight. If he whips my butt, I'll eat my words but let's see him prove it against me," Howard told SI.com.
The 32-year-old Boston-native is in his second stint in the UFC after being cut in 2011 because of three straight losses. He may be released again by the UFC after losing to Tim Means on Thursday at UFC Fight Night 80 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's his fourth loss in five fights and is 3-4 since returning last 2013.
UFC President Dana White revealed in an interview with TSN last week that he is already looking for Punk's opponent. White said that he's using his new show on YouTube called "Dana White Looking for a Fight" to find the right man to fight the former wrestler in his debut in 2016.
In the first episode of the reality show, White was seen scouting then signing 19-year-old lightweight prospect Sage Northcutt to a UFC contract. The UFC president recently went to Alaska and New Jersey to find more talent.
As for the date of the 37-year-old's UFC debut, White still doesn't know the exact date but he said that he is sure that Punk will be fighting next year. "It's the first time this guy has ever trained to fight. The guy's never wrestled. He's a professional wrestler, but he's never wrestled. He will fight next year, 100 percent," White said, per FOX Sports.
Punk has been training under Duke Roufus of Roufusports in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where former UFC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, ONE FC Welterweight champion Ben Askren and welterweight contender Tyron Woodley. The former WWE champion is currently getting back into shape after being sidelined for a few weeks because of a shoulder injury that happened in training.
