UFC: Conor McGregor Wants Mayweather-Pacquiao Numbers
Undisputed UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor set a new record at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for an MMA event with a $10.1 million gate. The record for the arena is "The Fight of the Century" between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao last May 2, but McGregor already has plans on topping the mark for his next fight.
"What did Floyd versus Manny do? 72 Million? I'm catching up. I'm only 27. Them old motherf*****s were 40 before they got that. At 27 years of age, I stand here, the unified world champion. This is trending as the highest pay-per-view of all time for the UFC," McGregor said via Bloody Elbow.
The record for a UFC live gate was $12.1 million for UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada last April 30, 2011, when Georges St-Pierre defeated Jake Shields. That event had an attendance of 55,724 while UFC 194 only had 16,516.
McGregor's next fight may very well set a UFC record, and he is already looking at his next fight, possibly at Croke Park in Ireland. "Notorious" can defend his belt against new No. 1 contender Frankie Edgar, who certainly earned his shot or go up at the lightweight division to fight the winner of the Rafael Dos Anjos-Donald Cerrone title fight.
"I would like to go up and face that 155-pound strap, so we'll see what's next but then I also respect the fact that Frankie Edgar got that nice win last night," McGregor told FOX Sports 1 as quoted by MMA Mania.
"80,000 in Croke Park and bring Frankie out, that would be sweet. If they have Croke Park and they want him, I'll take that, no problem. Times are good. The options are there," he added.
The UFC can go no wrong for the Irishman's next fight as Edgar is a former champion and a worthy opponent for his first title defense as the undisputed champion. McGregor has already talked trashed towards Dos Anjos and Cerrone at the recent Go Big Conference.
The possibility of breaking the UFC attendance record is inevitable, especially with McGregor's arrogance and trash talking that allows him to sell fights, per Bleacher Report. Add the fact that Croke Park is the third-largest stadium in Europe with an 82,300 capacity.
He also has shown that he is not all talk with the 13-second KO victory over the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, Jose Aldo. MMA Junkie noted that it set the record for the fastest victory in a UFC title match, beating out Ronda Rousey's 14-second submission win over Cat Zingano at UFC 184 last Feb. 28.
