EPL Week 16 Scores, Table & Standings: Leicester City Stay on Top With Win Over Chelsea
Leicester City remained on top of the 2015-16 English Premier League standings after scoring an impressive 2-1 victory against Chelsea on Monday at King Power Stadium.
Jamie Vardy was all business in the opening half, as he almost scored twice early in the game, but Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois managed to score crucial saves.
However, the duo of Vardy and Riyad Mahrez proved to be too much for Courtois in the 34th minute of the match. Mahrez fired a curling cross from the right side of the field, while Vardy launched a volley to give Leicester City a 1-0 lead. Nemanja Matic almost scored in immediate equalizer for Chelsea but his header went high off the crossbar.
After setting up Vardy for the first goal of the match, Mahrez, who recorded a hat-trick during their 3-0 win against Swansea City in Week 15, made it 2-0 for Leicester City in the 48th minute off a cross from Marc Albrighton.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho decided to bring in Loic Remy and Cesc Fabregas in place of John Terry and Oscar. Remy made his presence felt, as he scored a goal in the 77th minute, but he failed to score the equalizer, allowing the home team to escape with the victory.
"I am very pleased with the performance, we played very well. All the players believe in each other and help each other, only in this way you can win against the champions," Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri said. "We need five more points. When we get 40 points, then we change the target."
With the win, Leicester City remained on top of the standings and are two points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who have racked up 33 points in 16 matches. Manchester City is in third place with 32 points, followed by Manchester United with 29 points.
On the other hand, Chelsea are still in 16th place after absorbing their ninth defeat this season with only four wins and three draws. They are 20 points behind the current leaders and are just one point above relegation.
