Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz sparred with one another on social media Sunday, in a feud motivated by the Texas senator passing the businessman in latest Iowa polls.

Trump appeared on "Fox News Sunday," in which he threw jabs at his political rival.

"When you look at the way he's dealt with the Senate, where he goes in there, like a, you know, frankly like a little bit of a maniac, you're never going to get things done that way," said Trump, referring to Cruz butting heads with Republican leaders in Congress.

Cruz seemed amused at the remark, posting a video of a scene from the 1983 movie "Flashdance" on Twitter in response.

The post was just the latest in a weekend-long online Twitter match triggered by increased competition between the two front-running Republican candidates.

According to Fox News polls, Cruz garnered 28 percent support from likely Republican caucus-goers in Iowa, the first state to vote in the presidential nominating process. Trump, by contrast, received 26 percent of the vote.

Friday morning, Cruz appeared at a private fundraising event in which he allegedly questioned the electability of his rival Trump, as well as presidential candidate Ben Carson, according to CNN.

Trump took to Twitter to call out Cruz, saying the Texas senator would be an easy challenge.

Cruz responded by downplaying the rivalry.

However, Trump was still annoyed by Cruz's comments, implying that Cruz was afraid to acknowledge what he said.
