Mazda Sedans Recalled Again Due to Pesky Spiders Causing Vent Blockage
More spiders means more forced recalls for Mazda Motor Corp.
A common spider that likes the smell of gasoline gets into Mazda6 sedans weaving webs and causing vent blockage in the engine.
This is the second recall of the Mazda6. The most recent recall affects model years of 2010 to 2012. 42,000 vehicles are being recalled. The previous recall was in 2011.
The spider weaves a web and it can cause a restriction of fuel flow, a reduction in fuel tank pressure, stress on the fuel tank, and ultimately a fire risk.
The Yellow Sac spider is the species that enjoys the smell of gasoline and caused the 2011 recall. The same spider is being blamed for this recall.
In 2011, Mazda inserted a spring into the canister vent line to attempt to solve the problem. This was mostly successful, but engineers continued to see cracked fuel tanks, even when the spring was installed.
Now, engineers want to change the car's software to prevent these tanks from cracking even if spiders find a way to get into the cars.
Owners of the Mazda6 affected by the recall will be notified by their dealers. They will be able to get their evaporative canister vent line checked and cleaned. They'll also reprogam the owners' car's software.
This is the only vehicle in the Mazda line to be affected by this strange problem.
