PlayStation Executive Talks ‘Incredible’ 2016 Lineup Including Street Fighter, Uncharted 4 & PlayStation VR
The PlayStation team is winding down from a wildly successful year as the top player in the gaming industry, but the company is already looking forward to an even better performance in 2016, especially when it comes to their first-party game roster. The lineup is setting up to be very impressive in the coming year alongside the release of the hotly anticipated PlayStation VR.
In an interview with GameSpot during the PlayStation 20th Anniversary event in Sydney, Australia, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment in Australia Michael Ephraim spoke up about what's coming in 2016 and how the company fared in its run this year.
The executive said that the team has focused on third-party partnerships to boost season sales saying, "Games that have been released this year, from 'Destiny,' 'Call of Duty,' 'Star Wars' -- most of them we have a collaboration with for additional content if you play on PlayStation 4, so we're pretty confident with the way Christmas is going. The demand is strong."
He admitted, "We have worked very closely with third parties this year because our first party lineup was not as a strong as we would have liked."
However, Sony has been preparing for a strong rebound in terms of first-party titles in 2016, with several games already in the works and set for release next year.
"Next year, our first party lineup looks incredible," Ephraim said. "You've got 'Street Fighter, 'Uncharted 4,' 'No Man's Sky,' 'The Last Guardian,' 'Gran Turismo.' These are all exclusives, and two of them are new franchises."
Along with the first-party series that will be making its way to the console, Sony gaming is also looking forward to the release of PlayStation VR. The new technology is set to be a game-changer in the industry, but Ephraim is cautious on its market performance and said PS4 remains the primary
"We're still in the planning stages of PlayStation VR, and clearly based on the responses we're getting so far: it's very solid," he explained. "But our core business right now is PlayStation 4 and the offerings we have on there. Disc, digital, downloadable season passes, and endless entertainment. So, it'll be another component."
He added, "PlayStation 4 will still be our primary objective to grow the install base. PlayStation VR is new, everyone wants it, there are a lot of publishers developing for it. But whether it's going to just go completely nuts early, or if it's a slow build, time will tell."
With Xbox executive Yusuf Mehdi also praising Microsoft's future games as the "best lineup" according to a previous report from Latin Post, 2016 is shaping up to be a great year for the gaming community and the fans.
