'Star Trek Beyond' Trailer: New Trailer Hints at Action-Packed Movie [Watch]
The new trailer for "Star Trek Beyond" has hit the Internet, putting fans into a frenzy.
The new film's preview hints that this just might be the most action-packed of the new trilogy. There are even some stylistic divergences from its two immediate predecessors with a ton of slow-motion in some of the major battles.
The trailer's release opens with an image of Simon Pegg's character Montgomery Scott entering the Enterprise and questioning the sound of music. It is rather apt Pegg is the first character shown since he has been the most vocal person during the pre-production process.
The trailer was released days after Pegg made some revelations about the difficulty of putting the script together.
"It was emotional highs and lows all the way because we were under a lot of pressure, because the timeframe was a lot smaller than it would normally be," Simon Pegg told Coming Soon.
"You write a film of that size, you usually get a year or so, but I think we started maybe six months before we went into production, if that."
The new Star Trek movie is one of the most anticipated movies coming in the next few years, but it is far more interesting case than any of its predecessors. The first two films in the recent reboot had the steady hand of J.J. Abrams at the helm. Abrams was originally slated to direct the third installment but opted for helming the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Roberto Orci was selected to pen the script for the third installment and even direct it, but he was eventually replaced by Justin Lin.
This has made for a turbulent pre-production process eluded to in Pegg's statements.
The new film has a huge task at hand as it has to prove the film franchise has staying power in a highly competitive landscape. The first film, which was released in 2009, made $257 million in domestic gross and close to $400 million internationally.
Its sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" stumbled in domestic gross, bringing $228 million but also capturing $467 million worldwide. The challenge for "Beyond" is to prove this is a franchise that can gross big numbers in a world where major franchises are constantly looking at $1 billion worldwide as the number of validation.
The new film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana and Pegg among others. It is slated for release on July 22, 2016.
