'The Voice,' Season 9 Final Four Recap, Finale Set for Tuesday Night
The final four contestants on Season 9 of "The Voice" put all their musical talents on full display Monday night during Part 1 of the two-part finale.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jordan Smith, Emily Ann Roberts, Barrett Baber and Jeffrey Austin all performed tunes ranging from their favorite Christmas songs to coordinated duets with their respective coaches.
First to the stage was Team Adam's Smith, who showed off his range with a sparkling rendition of "Climb Every Mountain" from "The Sound of Music." Smith's on-point technical prowess and riveting vocal control drew a standing ovation from all the judges.
Next up was Team Blake's Roberts, who masterfully performed "Blue Christmas." As has been her style throughout the competition, Roberts didn't do too much in a performance that was more than enough to prompt Levine to marvel, "You're the real deal."
The same could be said of Baber, who opened with a duet with Shelton of "Rhinestone Cowboy," where he more than held his own aside his veteran mentor.
Finally, it was Team Gwen's Austin's chance to take the stage and his Christmas pick of "O Holy Night" played right into his wheelhouse of grace and power.
Later, Levine and Smith joined forces to perform the duet "God Only Knows." While the performance didn't prove to be a duet arranged in musical heaven, again it did afford Smith the chance to show off his spellbinding range.
Next, Baber went all in for his performance of "Die a Happy Man," blissfully connecting with the soul of the ballad and prompting Shelton to reflect, "I don't know that I've ever worked with anybody who puts more heart into their performances than you."
After her success with "9 to 5," Roberts sang another Dolly Parton song with Shelton. Their version of "Islands In the Stream" sounded like a natural.
Austin came back with "Stay" by Sugarland, and it played to all of his strengths. "You snuck up on all of us," Shelton shared.
For his Christmas song, Baber countrified "Silent Night," leaving Levine at a loss for words as to how he could have stayed so consistent all season long.
Austin and Stefani countered with a version of "Leather and Lace" and the choice of songs pretty much seemed tailor-made for them. It easily ranked as one of the best overall duets of the night.
Smith's Christmas song version of "Mary Did You Know" earned him a standing ovation from all the coaches. Later, Levine shared that he had picked a different song for the two to perform, but at the last minute Smith decided to go with the one they had just mastered.
Roberts brought down the curtains with a show-ending performance of "Burning House" by Cam.
Season 9's victor will be crowned Tuesday night in the two-hour finale. Celebrities scheduled to perform include Coldplay, Sam Hunt, Missy Elliott, Wynonna Judd, The Weeknd, Usher, Tori Kelly and Justin Bieber.
