Oculus Rift Virtual Reality: The Climb Showcases Mountain Climbing
Reviewers of Crytek's new virtual reality climbing game for the Oculus Rift have reported sweating and feeling thirsty.
The Climb aims to provide a real-life rock climbing experience to Oculus Rift users.
The Climb is a simple, but realistic climbing game that uses the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, Polygon reports.
In The Climb players get a first-hand look at a dangerous mountain and attempt to get to the top of it.
To play The Climb, players press either the left or right trigger to grab the nearest ledge within their view. To look around, players physically move their head and neck up and down and side to side. If there are no ledges within grabbing distance, players can attempt to jump to the nearest ledge.
Crytek wanted to build a simple game for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.
"What we've done is focused our team," Crytek's director of production David Bowman says. "We want to give the most beautiful VR experience within the scope of being an Oculus launch title. In order to do that, we have to stay focused. We have to make it just the best climbing experience possible."
The game starts off with an easy introductory climb, a way for new climbers to learn the technique. As the game goes on, the climbs and mountains get harder.
The avatar that players use in the game needs to take breaks, and his hands will get sweaty. This is where patience and chalk will help. It is important to keep the hands chalked to keep the avatar from losing grip of the rocks.
The Climb is a single player game, but it will have a social aspect to it. Players will be able to post their scores and progress on Facebook and compete with their friends.
