Soccer: Will Leicester City Sell Riyad Mahrez in January?
Riyad Mahrez is expected to draw interest when the January transfer window opens. But will he decide to leave Leicester City next month?
The Leicester City Foxes are currently on top of the English Premier League standings after Week 16 competition. And for Mahrez, leaving King Power Stadium to move to a bigger club is not a logical move because of the way they have been playing this season.
Mahrez, who has tallied 11 goals and seven assists in 15 matches this season, admitted that winning the Premier League title is a long shot because the top-tier teams will eventually outmuscle them later in the season. However, the 24-year-old is determined to stay at King Power Stadium.
The Algeria international said in an interview with RMC that Leicester City will suffer a lot if he will leave or if the club will part ways with Jamie Vardy and N'Golo Kante, who are both expected to draw interest as well next month.
"The best thing for me would be to stay," Mahrez said via ESPN FC. "I'm not going to leave in January. It wouldn't be good for my team if I left. If we lose an individual like me, Vardy or Kante, it could penalize the team. I'd prefer to continue with the team until the end of the season."
Aside from Mahrez, Vardy is also being linked to a move out of King Power Stadium because Leicester City and manager Claudio Ranieri are also expected to get attractive offers next month.
According to Mirror, Manchester United and Chelsea could bid for Vardy, but the striker, who has netted 15 goals to go along with two assists in 16 Premier League appearances this season, also sounded determined to stay.
"I do think Leicester can match my ambitions," Vardy said. "The gaffer [Ranieri] has come in and told the owners what he wants to do and he wants to keep progressing. He wants to progress on what we did last year and in years to come he wants to keep us going up and up and up. It's great for the club and he is a great manager."
For his part, Ranieri also reiterated that they will not sell both Vardy and Mahrez in January.
"No one can buy Vardy or Mahrez in January," Ranieri told reporters, following their impressive 2-1 win against Chelsea, where both Mahrez and Vardy scored. "They don't have the money and they don't have a price."
