The "Bones" midseason finale ended with a devastating shocker as Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) was left paralyzed from the waist down. Now, the show's executive producers say his paralysis will have a lasting impact that will jeopardize his marriage, relationships, and career.

Although Hodgins was fortunate enough to survive a bomb that sent him and Aubrey (John Boyd) to the hospital, fans discovered that the explosion caused catastrophic damage to his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed. Aubrey, on the other hand, was able to recover from the bomb without any severe injuries.

To make matters worse, right before Hodgins was injured, he planned to have more children with his wife Angela (Michaela Conlin). This may not happen now as a result of his injuries, but it is still too early to know whether or not this is going to be permanent.

In an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Michael Peterson previewed the long, difficult road ahead for Hodgins, who will struggle with anger management once again. His anger will also drive him to push his family away from him, which will put a major strain on his marriage.

"It's a process. There's all these different stages of dealing with a tragedy -- you go through anger, you go through denial -- and he's really going to hit every single one of them," Peterson said.

"It affects his job, it affects his relationship with Angela and his kids. We're going to see the Hodgins of the first couple of seasons, a guy who had to work with anger management, who used to snap his rubber band on his wrist to keep some of his anger in control. He's going to be a little more Gregory House than Hodgins for a while. He's just [angry] at the world. This is not where life was supposed to be take him."

When asked if Hodgins will ever be able to walk again, Peterson told TVGuide.com, "You can't say never, but as far as we're concerned, he's going to be wheelchair-bound."

Meanwhile, as Hodgins hits an all-time low in his life, Angela will turn to Sebastian Kohl (Gil Darnell) for comfort.

"Angela's going to need a shoulder to lean on," Peterson said, adding her relationship with the photojournalist could threaten her marriage.

"We'll play with some tensions that perhaps she's relying on Sebastian a bit too much. For her, Sebastian is this alternative life. She has this wonderful life with Hodgins and she's very happy, but there is this alternative life of adventure and being an artist and traveling all over the world, and he represents that. When she decided last year to not move to Paris and stay at the Jeffersonian and support Hodgins, she was OK with that decision. But there's this dream other life that's out there and he embodies that."

Thyne also opened up about his character's paralysis and what fans can expect to see in the second half of the season.

"When we pick back up, Jack is very much anxious to prove that he's absolutely going to get out of the chair as soon as possible and it's his struggle to stay as positive as possible while the rest of the team is so desperately concerned about him," the actor said.

"The last thing they want him to do is work and the only thing he can think to do is work. So, there's that real struggle. They're taking away from him the one thing that's going to actually give him the hope to be able to walk. So it's a real stressful time for them all, but he believes that he's going absolutely crush this thing and get out of that chair as soon as possible, but I don't know that that's really the truth."

The series star added that the tragedy will be the source of conflict between Hodgins and Angela. Hodgins will feel angry he can't have a child and will thus take his anger out on his wife.

Having a baby is "the one thing that she wants that he now can't provide her, and I think that makes him feel like he's incapable and quite literally incompetent at being able to provide her the one thing she wants."

Executive producer John Collier added the storyline about Hodgins is not just about him. Rather, it's "about Hodgins and Angela as a couple," he told TVLine.

"We really want to test their relationship, and we figured this would be a good way to do it. It's going to get really difficult for them. We believe in them as a couple, but we really want to push them. ... There's a good chance he will never walk again."

Meanwhile, Booth and Brennan will also confront a new challenge in their relationship from "an external force" when the show returns next year, said the showrunner.

A definitive date has not been set from the midseason premiere, but Collier said fans should expect the series to return sometime in March or April.
