Derrick Gordon Comes Out: UMass Basketball Player Becomes First Openly Gay Player In Div. 1 Men's Basketball
UMass sophomore Derrick Gordon became the first openly gay player in Division 1 men's basketball on Wednesday after coming out in an article for Outsports.
Gordon, who is a starter on the basketball team and transferred over from Western Kentucky University last fall, came out to everyone around him in a relatively short period of time. It all happened in April, according to ESPN.
"I just didn't want to hide anymore, in any way," Gordon said ESPN. "I didn't want to have to lie or sneak. I've been waiting and watching for the last few months, wondering when a Division I player would come out, and finally I just said, 'Why not me?'"
Gordon said he found inspiration and confidence from Jason Collins, the first openly gay male professional athlete in a major American sport. In addition, he prepared his coming out story by reaching out to Wade Davis, the Executive Director of You Can Play, as well as many others.
"Over the past year, I've gotten to know Derrick Gordon," Davis said. "He's like a little brother to me. I've watched him grow into a confident young man who is ready to be a leader on and off the court. His fearless desire to be his authentic self and his personal story of triumph will inspire others and continue to expand consciousness."
Not surprisingly, members of the UMass sports community are also welcoming Gordon.
"UMass is proud to have Derrick Gordon as a member of our athletic family and to honor his courage and openness as a gay student-athlete," the school's Director of Athletics, John McCutcheon, said in a statement. "UMass is committed to creating a welcoming climate where every student-athlete, coach and staff member can be true to themselves as they pursue their athletic, academic and professional goals."
