Chile's 'The Club' & 'Me and the Earl and the Dying Girl' Lead Cinema Tropical's 6th Annual Awards
The sixth annual Cinema Tropical Film awards have been announced with Pablo Larrain's "The Club" leading the nominees.
Cinema Tropical announced that 29 films from 12 countries are competing for this years awards, which include Best Feature Film, Best Documentary Film, Best Director, Feature Film Documentary Film, Best First Film and Best U.S. Latino Film.
Larrain's "The Club" is nominated for Best Feature alongside Lisandro Alonso's "Jauja," Oscar Ruiz's "Los Hongos," Matías Piñeiro's "The Princess of France" and Adirley Queirós' "White Out, Black In."
Larrain, who is nominated for Best Director will compete against Nicolás Pereda for "The Absent," Gabriel Mascaro for "August Winds," Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas for "Sand Dollars" and Paz Fábrega for "Viaje."
Mexico's Oscar submission, "600 Miles," will compete against Guatemala's first Oscar submission "Ixcanul," "The Fire," "She Comes Back on Thursday" and "Videophilia."
The nominees for Best U.S. Latino Films of the Year included "The Book of Life" by Jorge Gutierrez, "East Side Sushi" by Anthony Lucero, "Mala Mala" by Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles, and "We Like It Like That" by Mathew Ramirez Warren.
The Sundance winner, "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, was also nominated in this category.
The Cinema Tropical Awards are one of the few awards that honor the best in Latin American film. In previous years "El Lugar del Hijo," "Viola" and "o Som Ao redor" have all taken home the Best Feature Film award. Other winners have included "El Estudiante," "Mosquita y Mari" and "Octubre."
The winners of the Cinema Tropical Awards will be announced during a special evening ceremony at The New York Times Company headquarters on Jan. 20, 2016. The winning films will later be showcased at the the Cinema Tropical Festival at Museum of the Moving Image on Feb. 25-28, 2016.
