MLB Rumors: Tampa Bay Rays Considering Evan Longoria Trade?
The Tampa Bay Rays finished at 80-82 and placed fourth in the AL East to have their second straight losing season. The Rays are not really contenders for next season, so are they considering trading star third baseman Evan Longoria?
According to Matt Trueblood of FOX Sports, Tampa Bay should trade Longoria as he is already in the decline offensively and defensively, and while he still has value on the trade market. His contract is a very controllable deal that many teams would want, especially when Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said that the team is in a very bad financial situation.
The report also said that Longoria is a great trade bait as he will bring back more than a few prospects, who the Rays can use to rebuild the team. The Arizona Diamondbacks may remain active on the trade market as they need a better option in third base besides second-year player Jake Lamb.
However, the Diamondbacks have to make some moves first to free up money after their current spending spree this offseason. The Detroit Tigers is another team that can afford Longoria, but they already have Nick Castellanos.
The Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates have also expressed interest, having a very deep farm system, but they also have the same financial restrictions that Tampa Bay has. The Washington Nationals can also afford Longoria's contract and have the prospects to convince the Rays to let the third baseman go.
The Nationals can move Anthony Rendon at second base and Danny Espinosa at shortstop if they ever acquire the three-time All-Star. However, the team with the most legitimate chance to land Longoria are the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers have Andrew Friedman who formerly worked in Tampa Bay and they have MLB-ready players and the financial capability to easily eat up Longoria's contract. Los Angeles have Corey Seager to play shortstop and move Justin Turner at second baseman.
It is not the first time someone suggested that the Rays deal Longoria as Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe noted in a report last October that the 30-year-old third baseman is a perfect fit for the Los Angeles Angels. Fansided added that "Longo" is one of the best players in the MLB, but baseball fans easily forget about him as he plays for a Rays team that is barely relevant for a couple of seasons now.
Longoria has a career .271 batting average, with 205 home runs and 708 RBIs, per Baseball Reference. He is the Tampa Bay's all-time leader in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, wins above replacement, doubles, extra-base hits, sacrifice flies and intentional walks.
