UFC: Rafael Dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone Warns Conor McGregor He'll Get Hurt in Lightweight Division
UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has plans to move up to lightweight for his next fight and challenge the winner of the Rafael Dos Anjos-Donald Cerrone title fight. However, Dos Anjos and Cerrone both warn McGregor that he'll just get hurt when he moves up from the 145- to the 155-pound division.
"He gets a lot of hype, and he's a good fighter. But if he comes to the lightweight division, he's going to get hurt," Dos Anjos told the Denver Post. The UFC lightweight champion also sounded off on the way McGregor got his title fight after just seven bouts while he had to endure 18 gruelling matches before winning a belt by defeating Anthony Pettis.
"I don't do short cuts. It took so many fights for me to get my title shot, but if the UFC thinks I should fight him, I'm going to do it," he added.
Even though he does not like Dos Anjos, Cerrone agrees with him that "Notorious" will have a hard time in the lightweight division. "He's too small to come to 155. His jaw is powerful. He's got good talk. But he won't fare well with the top lightweight fighters," Cerrone said.
"He might do good with the lower-ranked guys if they do the same thing they did with the featherweights and pick and choose his guys, but if they throw him in the lightweight top 10, no way," he added.
However, if ever he wins the lightweight belt, "Cowboy" is open to fighting McGregor in Ireland. He notes that it's not a bad idea to fight the Irishman as he is welcome to having a big payday that comes with the pay-per-view drawing power of the featherweight champion.
The 27-year-old's star shone the brightest when he delivered a 13-second KO win over Jose Aldo at UFC 194. UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta has predicted that McGregor will become the company's first $100 millionaire based on his fight earnings, bonuses and PPV revenue, per ESPN.
McGregor's head coach John Kavanagh revealed in an interview with The MMA Hour recently that their plan is to fight either Dos Anjos or Cerrone in April, then defend the featherweight belt in July, possibly at UFC 200. No.1 contender Frankie Edgar's camp has started the trash talking, telling McGregor is running and scared.
Rafael Dos Anjos will defend his lightweight title against Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 17 in Orlando, Florida on Dec. 19, 2015.
