San Bernandino Shooter Friend Enrique Marquez Admitted Terrorist Involvement on Facebook
Enrique Marquez Jr., the man accused of supplying weapons to one of the San Bernardino shooters, admitted his involvement in a terrorist plot on Facebook a month before the Dec. 2 attack.
NBC News reports 24-year-old Marquez is being charged with purchasing the assault rifles used in the San Barnardino shooting, plotting an attack with gunman Syed Rizwan Farook in 2011 and 2012, and negotiating a fake marriage with one of Farook's relatives.
Federal prosecutors said there was no evidence found of Marquez's involvement in the Dec. 2 attack, in which Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik opened fired at a holiday party in Ingland Regional Center, killing 14 people.
However, Marquez and did allegedly plan to carry out attacks on Riverside Community College and a Southern California freeway with Farook, about four years ago.
According to an FBI affidavit, Marquez alluded to his involvement in a Facebook post on Nov. 5.
"No one knows really knows me, I lead multiple lives and I'm wondering when its all going to collapse on M[e]," wrote Marquez.
When a user replied that everyone leads multiple lies, Marquez said that he was involved in, "terrorist plots, drugs, antisocial behavior, marriage, might go to prison for fraud, etc."
Marquez was a next-door neighbor and childhood friend of Farook. They both attended the same high school, though years apart.
Farook and Marquez became friends, and after converting to Islam in 2007, Marquez begin reading the radical views of U.S.-born Anwar al-Awlaki. He later plotted a terrorist attack with Farook, but lost his nerve when four local men were arrested and convicted of planning an unrelated attack.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Marquez also eloped with Mariya Chernykh, sister to one Farook's in-law relatives. Farook asked Marquez to marry Chernykh so that she could gain residency to the United States, and was allegedly paid $200 a month for having done so. He is also facing charges for the sham marriage.
