Super Mario RPG is being revived on the Wii U.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is coming to the Wii U Virtual Console in Europe, Techno Buffalo reports. Nintendo of Europe confirmed that the 1996 classic is coming, but Nintendo of America has yet to confirm that it will be released in the U.S.

The original game was the first time that Mario and his friends appeared in a role-playing game. Super Mario RPG was released in May 1996 for the Super Nintendo console, and Nintendo partnered with Square to make the game. Square is most known for making role playing games like Final Fantasy.

In Super Mario RPG, players control Mario through a mixture of adventuring through detailed maps and turn-based battles with magic and bonuses. Mario is also joined by two new characters: Mallow and Geno. He has Princess Peach by his side, as well as Bowser, a former enemy who has teamed with him to defeat Smithy.

During battles, Mario is joined by two of the four other characters at once. Mario has some unusual attacks that were not seen in any previous Mario game before.

As Mario explores the maps, players are able to see any enemies, allowing them to avoid fights and continue on without getting into battles.

Additionally, players can enjoy the many jokes and funny commentary throughout the game. The interactions between the characters found on the map are sprinkled with humor. Some of the jokes could be the result of disputes between Nintendo and Square, which was starting to focus on PlayStation games, causing Nintendo some grief.

While Mario RPG is much different from other Mario titles, since it features a role playing style of gameplay, it is also one of the most fun games in the series. Mario RPG inspired current titles like Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi.
