The numbers are up for this year's Forbes list of Overpaid Actors in Hollywood, and at the top of the list is "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp. Although the list seemingly reveals just how big the earnings of the stars were in the past year, they are however considered as an expensive risk as the return is much lower.

Just like in Depp's case, Forbes reports that the "Mortdecai" actor only returned $1.20 for every $1 that was paid to him in his recent movies combined. So what the publication is looking at is the return of investment and not just the individual gain of actors.

Furthermore, Depp, being at the top of the list, gained such position after his previous films including "Transcendence" didn't make it to box office gold even though he got millions out of it. However, his four films in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise was a huge success as it grossed $3.7 billion combined.

Second on the list is another veteran actor, Denzel Washington, who had a return investment of $6.50 for every $1 he got paid in his recent projects including "Equalizer." Meanwhile, the news agency revealed that the list of actors were chosen based on their last three films, where they starred in before June 2015.

And with that, the news outlet speculates that results could change after Depp's upcoming movie projects arrives, which are expected to gain millions including "Alice Through The Looking Glass" (slated to premiere this 2016) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" (scheduled in 2017).

It is still looking bright for Depp even when Us Weekly reported that his recent project in "Mordecai" merely earned $47 million but was costly to make at $60 million. Meanwhile, "Transcendence," which premiered back in 2014, was also costly at $100 million while Depp's "Black Mass" earned $94.5 million.

Furthermore, Forbes revealed that the third in the spot belong to "Get Hard" and "Anchorman 2" actor Will Ferrell, which had returns of $6.80 for every $1 he got paid. The highly paid actors were then compared to Chris Evans, who had better numbers at $181.80 return for every $1 paid to him and is named to be Best Actor For The Buck in Hollywood, the publication reports.

Adam Sandler was in the number one spot at Forbes' Most Overpaid Actors in Hollywood list for two years before Depp.
