‘Pretty Little Liars’ Season 7 Could Be PPL's Final Installment, Says Showrunner
"Pretty Little Liars" currently stands as a teen favorite television series that continues its run of success in its sixth season on air. However, series creator Marlene King has recently come out and said that the ABC show might be nearing its last leg on television.
According to a report from Variety, the "Pretty Little Liars" creator confirmed that she would prefer to see the show come to a close after its seventh season.
The five-year time jump that occurred at the beginning of the sixth season -- which was similar to the "Dawson's Creek" and "One Tree Hill" fast forward approach during their respective runs -- was expected to give the "Pretty Little Liars" more freedom to continue its story indefinitely, but King denied it.
"I think that this story when we're back will end next year at the end of Season 7," the showrunner told Variety in an interview.
When asked if she wanted the finish line to be at the end of the seventh season, King confirmed, "Correct."
It might be disappointing for the large fanbase the show has amassed throughout its run, but this is not the first time the people behind "Pretty Little Liars" have hinted about the end coming after the last confirmed season. In an interview with E! News back in 2014, actress Lucy Hale casually disclosed that while a big-screen adaptation remains an enticing possibility, the television run will see its exit after the seventh season.
"Yeah, there's like rumors of maybe a movie -- there might be a movie, but seven seasons will definitely end the show," Hale said in the interview.
Earlier this year, King offered a conflicting perspective as she admitted that she remains open to a movie as well as another season past the current guaranteed contract with ABC. She told Variety in a separate report, "I think we'll let the fans tell us what they want. We're open to that."
"We just try to keep the train moving as fast as possible on the tracks," King continued. "We haven't slowed down, and we started in the beginning telling the story at a super fast speed and we try to keep up that speed, keep the twists and turns and the 'OMG' moments coming."
"Pretty Little Liars" has kept its fans intrigued with exciting twists and unstoppable drama week in and week out, as well as launching the careers of teen idols Hale, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson and Sasha Pieterse.
