Majority of American Christians Are Accepting of Homosexuality
A new study shows that the Christian community has become more accepting towards homosexuality.
According to The Pew Research Center, Christians in every major sect are more supportive of homosexuality in society, even if they attend churches that strongly condemn homosexual relationships.
The majority of Christians, 54 percent, also agree that "homosexuality should be accepted, rather than discouraged, by society," states the report.
The biggest Christian supporters of the LGBT community are Catholics: 70 percent said they are most likely to support homosexual acceptance in society compared to 58 percent who supported it back in 2007. Meanwhile, 62 percent of Orthodox Christians said they are in support, while only 48 percent were supportive in 2007.
"The trend of growing acceptance is evident across many specific Protestant denominations, including some conservative denominations with official teachings that remain strongly opposed to same-sex marriage," writes The Pew Research Center.
"For example, among members of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the share saying homosexuality should be accepted by society grew by 12 points (from 44% to 56%) between 2007 and 2014. And although Pentecostals who identify with the Assemblies of God remain largely opposed to homosexuality, 26% now say it should be accepted by society, up from 16% in 2007."
Jehova's Witnesses, however, have seen the least growth in support for homosexuality. Sixteen percent said they are in support compared to 12 percent in a 2007 poll.
Most of the support of homosexuality is being driven by millennials of faith. Slightly over half of Evangelical Protestants born between 1981 and 1996 support acceptance, while only a third of those in the Baby Boomer generation and a fifth of senior evangelicals born from the late 1920s to the early 1940s.
The study also shows that 83 percent of nonreligious people have accepted homosexuality, while 76 percent of members of non-Christian faiths say the same.
Altogether, 62 percent of Americans support the LGBT community.
