Google Glass 2.0: Google Sends Pictures to FCC for Approval of New Wearable
An updated version of the Google Glass wearable device is coming soon.
Google sent in plans for the second version of the device to the Federal Communications Commission, and the device is definitely on its way.
Google sent in photos of the next Google Glass device, along with its internal circuitry and a basic user manual, CNet reports. The device will look very similar to the first Google Glass wearable from 2013.
In the documents filed with the FCC, Google calls the wearable model GG1. The design looks like a set of eyeglass frames with a screen that floats above the user's eye.
Previous reports and mockups showed that the next Google Glass would look more like a monocle and just hug half of the user's head, but that does not look like a reality yet for Google.
The next edition of Google Glass may be targeted more to businesses than consumers. Google could sell the devices directly to businesses in mass quantities, and could also create a consumer and an enterprise edition of the Google Glass.
The next rendition is expected to be sturdier, have a larger prism, include an Intel Atom processor and have some waterproofing features.
The Google Glass could be useful to doctors, scientists and other professionals. The original version did not sell well because of its expensive price and privacy concerns.
Google has to find a way to stress that wearers are not taking pictures of strangers when they wear the device. When the first Google Glass device was released, many people thought they were being spied on or photographed by a wearer.
After poor sales, Google stopped selling the first edition of Glass in January 2015.
The second edition of Google Glass is expected to be released in mid-2016 at a hefty price tag between $1,000 and $1,500.
