After pop singer Becky G released three new songs on Dec. 21, speculation arose that one of those songs may be about her ex-boyfriend Austin Mahone.

In the song "The Lights," the Mexican-American star sings about about struggling with her current situation and starts the song off with the lyrics, "Sometimes I feel this isn't working, 'cause I'm spending all my time working."

In her recent interview with Seventeen magazine, the pop singer admitted that the real reason behind her breakup from Mahone was because they were too busy with their careers, leading them to a mutual decision to split.

"I was with someone who was really amazing and inspiring, and everything was right about us except the timing," she told the magazine. "We had so many dreams and aspirations before we started dating and you can't forget those. Honestly, it sucked really bad, but he's so awesome and there's no bad blood."

However, examined more closely, the song may also be about the sacrifices the teen has had to make in pursuit of her career.

While one of these sacrifices may have been her relationship with Mahone, with whom she split in August, the song mentions her friends, being away from home, constantly working and traveling.

She sings, "My heart is weighing heavy, my tank is running empty, these hours moving slowly, and my phone it don't fulfill me, oh no. Looking out these small ass windows, another day, another city. Only angels here in the night time. Ain't nobody's with me. I need my day one clique
on a day one sheer. Damn, I need that so bad, that's my fix,"

The verse seems more of a homage to her family and longtime friends, whom she has to leave behind for the lights, a representation of fame.

The singer has revealed that the song is a prime example of how she expresses herself through music.

"I wrote this song because I had bottled up things I was feeling and didn't know what else to do other than put it into my work in the studio that day," she captioned the video on YouTube.
