MLB The Show 14 Release Date on PS3 & PS4: Next-Gen Gameplay Praised; New Pitch Count Feature Introduced To Shorten Games
Despite the wild success of NBA 2K14 this basketball season, MLB The Show is already being called the best next-gen sports game ever.
MLB The Show is currently only available on the PlayStation 3 platform but it will soon be making its way to the PlayStation 4 on May 6. Most of the reviews are indicating that the graphics improvement is significant, as expected, but even more importantly, the gameplay seems to be up to par with expectations as well.
"In terms of the actual gameplay, I was only able to compete head-to-head and against the CPU (online isn't ready yet), but I have to say, the PS4 version is not only looking better than its PS3 counterpart, it's playing better as well," Jon Robinson said in a review for Sports Illustrated. "Over 200 new fielding animations were added exclusively to the PS4 field, and I saw everything from a ball ricocheting off Matt Cain's leg only to be barehanded by (a now slimmer-looking) Pablo Sandoval as he gunned the runner out at first, to all new catcher animations showcasing the masked men jumping out from their crouch to pounce on bunts out in front of the plate."
The creators of MLB The Show also spent time trying to figure out a way to make the game shorter, which is a more difficult task to accomplish since baseball games go by innings while basketball or football games can be easily shortened by making quarters shorter. In order to fix this, the popular baseball game introduced the ability to have batters start with random pitch counts. This way there is not as much dead time with meaningless pitches.
