'One-Punch Man' Review: Why This Anime Sleeper Hit Worked
"One-Punch Man," this year's sleeper anime hit have taken the world by storm.
With the season 1 of the hit anime recently concluded, it left many fans wanting for more. Fortunately, creator Yusuke Marata confirmed in a tweet that he will do his best to make "One-Punch Man" season 2 a reality.
Emertainment Monthly described the series as "the perfect Shonen for people tired of Shonen."
The series' story is simple that it can be basically described easily. "One-Punch Man," like the title suggests, is literally about a super hero that can beat his opponent with just one punch.
The plot, although simple and minimalist, has become one of the recent brilliant manga and anime to ever hit the world. "One-Punch Man" proved that a "shonen" anime does not need to have an over-the-top protagonist, hell bent on taking over the world or going in a grand adventure for it to be entertaining.
In fact, Saitama, the hero of the series, that despite his immense power, can be best described as humble, stoic and boring. Its origin can also be called humble since it was just based on a webcomic written and drawn by ONE -- a well-known artist for humorous writing and dialogue.
The manga remake pairs ONE with artist Yusuke Murata, who adds to the comedic effect of the series. Furthermore, many also credit the series' success to Murata's talent to jump from intense action panels to crudely drawn depictions of Saitama, which diffuses any tension to the story.
This is how "One-Punch Man" separates itself from the many series that rely on complex characters, plot and universe that usually drown fans in intense action and drama. Although these type of series can be engaging, it can also be draining.
And also unlike many shonen series, wherein the main character got his power via some magical item or a powerful wizard, Saitama got his immense strength just by training on his own; however, the training was so intense that it resulted in losing his hair.
The series really penetrated the mainstream pop culture because Anime News Network reported that fans can now make their own bento lunches modeled after "One-Punch Man."
Furthermore, Kotaku reported that the entire opening of the series was remade using Microsoft Paint. Created by a YouTuber named Jim Boom, it took him around 50 grueling hours to do a frame-by-frame remake showing the hero beating up everywhere and everyone.
