LG has big screen plans for its next smartphone, which will likely be called the G3.

Recently, LG told Engadget that its next flagship phone, the successor to its G2, will be equipped with what the company calls a Quad HD screen. The bigger news comes in its resolution, however. The screen will have 2,560 X 1,440 pixel resolution. This is a major improvement from the G2, which features "Full HD 1080p IPS display [and] clarity of 423-pixel-per-inch resolution," according to LG.

This new news means that the LG G3 will be part of an exclusive group of phones that boast a bigger than 1080p panel, according to Engadget. The group includes the Vivo Xplay 3S and the Oppo Find 7, two Chinese phones. The high-tech display reportedly means that pictures may look better on the phone and will "look almost analog," Engadget reports.

Rumor has it that the G3 will have a 5.5-inch screen. Therefore, the smartphone will have a pixel density of 530 pixels per inch. This is a big deal because it means that the phone will trump its biggest competitors, the Samsung Galaxy S5, the HTC One (M8) and Apple's iPhone, which have pixel densities of 432 ppi, 441 ppi and 326 ppi, respectively according to TIME.

Is all this really necessary, however?

"...it's already difficult or impossible to pick out individual pixels on 1080p phones," TIME suggested. "The good news is that LG is also touting more accurate colors and improved contrast as part of the new technology. While those improvements are trickier to translate into marketable numbers, at this point they're more important than pushing more pixels."

A release date of the LG G3 has yet to be announced. Predictions based off of LG's previous release history, however, say that the phone will debut this summer and will be available for purchase in the fall.
