Soccer Debate: Is Cristiano Ronaldo Shooting the Ball Too Much For Real Madrid?
Cristiano Ronaldo has arguably the deadliest strike in the soccer world today. He can strike with accuracy from 20 yards out and put it on goal with full force. That numbers clearly back that up as Ronaldo has been one of the most prolific goal scorers in recent memory.
But, is Ronaldo a little too shooter friendly? Do we dare say he's a bit of a "ball hog?"
Let's dive into some league numbers this year.
Ronaldo has taken by far the most shots this La Liga season, 116 in 18 games. As a team Real Madrid has taken 360 total shots this La Liga season. That means the Portuguese forward is accounting for nearly 33 percent of all of Real Madrid's shots taken. Karim Benzema has the second most shots on goal for Real Madrid with just 47 while Gareth Bale is third with 44. Ronaldo has taken 25 more shots than Benzema, and Bale combined this season in just 18 league games. Of Ronaldo's 116 shots taken this year, just 45 have been on goal.
Ronaldo is averaging 6.4 shots taken per game while Benzema is averaging just 3.9, and Bale is averaging 3.6.
Ronaldo has a team-leading 14 goals with Benzema (12) and Bale (9) trailing by just two and five respectively. Now is where we find out the efficiency. Ronaldo's 14 goals on 116 shots is a 12 percent scoring ratio. Meanwhile Benzema is scoring on more than 25 percent of his shots, and Bale is finding the back of the net on just over 27 percent of his shots taken. The numbers don't lie.
Is it paying off? Maybe, maybe not. One could argue it's a good thing because Ronaldo is a such a deadly scorer, and he is virtually unstoppable with penalty kicks. Like superstars in any sport, it's important to keep your best player happy. The last thing Real Madrid wants to do is get Ronaldo upset. As bad as things may seem, Real Madrid is still in third place in the La Liga standings with a long way to go. Maybe Ronaldo is just adapting into a full-time striker.
On the flip side, Real Madrid's offense isn't as powerful as last season. Head coach Rafael Benitez was recently fired, and Colombian middle fielder James Rodriguez isn't getting his fair share of shots on goal this season.
Earlier this year former teammate and Mexican forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez claimed Ronaldo was "obsessed" with scoring goals. Reports have also surfaced that Bale is upset with Ronaldo for shooting too often instead of passing.
Of course no soccer debate involving Ronaldo would be complete without mentioning Lionel Messi and Barcelona. Let's compare Ronaldo's shooting numbers and ratios to the superstars of Barcelona.
This La Liga season Lionel Messi leads Barcelona with 63 shots. Messi has just one less assist than Ronaldo despite playing in eight fewer games. Luis Suarez has the second most shots on Barcelona with 61 while Neymar has 60. That is far more balanced than Real Madrid's attack. Barcelona's South American trio is only separated by three total shots while Real Madrid's top three shooting selection is separated by a whopping 72 shots. As previously mentioned, Ronaldo accounts for nearly 33 percent of all of Real Madrid's shots. Messi, this season, has 63 shots of Barcelona's total 280. That's 22.5 percent of Barcelona's shooting output, 11 percent less than what Ronaldo takes.
Neymar has just as many goals this year as Ronaldo, but he has taken 56 less shots. That's incredible. Suarez has one more goal than Ronaldo, but the Uruguayan forward has taken 55 fewer shots. It may be time for Ronaldo to start trusting his teammates a bit more going forward.
