Jennifer Lopez may play a cop in her new NBC series "Shades of Blue," but the star explains that the show is more than just a cop show.

In an interview on The Today Show with Natalie Morales, Lopez discussed what she loves about her new show and why it's more of a story about people in general.

"What I love about this story and this piece is mostly that it is very human. People at the core are good, but we do things that are questionable all the time. We make bad decisions, and then we have to live with them," she said.

In the new series, Lopez plays Harlee Santos, a single mother and cop from Brooklyn who becomes an FBI informant after being caught playing dirty. Santos is then forced to do her job as a cop, spy on her fellow officers and continue to try and give her daughter a good life.

Lopez explained that it is because of all these variables that "Shades of Blue," which also stars Ray Liotta, Drea de Matteo, Warren Cole, Hampton Fluker and Dayo Okeniyi, isn't going to be just another cop show.

"You know, I played so many cops and about it, but it's not so much about cops as it is about the world and about human nature," she explained.

The highly anticipated series isn't the only thing Lopez, 46, has on her plate this year.

Besides promoting "Shades of Blue," Lopez is currently preparing to begin working on the final season of "American Idol" and to begin her Las Vegas residency, called "Jennifer Lopez: All I Have," on Jan. 20 at the AXIS Theater in the Planet Hollywood Casino and Resort.

The Puerto Rican star revealed she has no plans to slow down and is glad she continues to remain popular in the entertainment industry.

"It means a lot to me. Being in this business since I was in my early 20s that there was always a moment where they were going to be write you off," she added.
