Marc Jacobs Gets Transgender 'Matrix' Director Lana Wachowski as New Campaign Star
Lana Wachowski, born Larry Wachowski, is the new face of Marc Jacobs' Summer/Spring 2016 campaign. Jacobs introduced "The Matrix" director and revealed his reasons for choosing him for his campaign ad on his Instagram page.
Jacobs took to his Instagram to share a photo of Wachowski, taken by photographer David Sim, dressed in a plaid dress topped with a cardigan. The 52-year-old designer labelled the director's picture as the first portrait of his Spring/Summer 2016 ad campaign. Jacobs described Wachowski's photo as a reminder of their shared sentiment about "learning you can make important friends at anytime in your life."
The designer also shared a lengthy message explaining his reasons for choosing Wachowski for the campaign. He recalled the first time he was introduced to the director in December 2012 through a YouTube video, where it showed Wachowski giving his acceptance speech for his Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award. Jacobs admitted his speech moved him and has stayed in his mind since.
"She expressed thoughts and ideas that have filled my head and heart always but had never been so eloquently captured in language that was so tangible, intelligent, poignant and full of possibility. I found myself referencing Lana's words in my daily life and sharing her speech with close friends. In the days before our Spring/Summer '16 fashion show and through a fateful series of communications, much to my incomprehensible delight, Lana accepted an invitation to our show in New York City and thus I took her, 'fashion show virginity,'" Jacobs wrote on his Instagram along with the photo of Wachowski.
Jacobs also revealed what his Spring/Summer 2016 campaign is all about in the same Instagram post. The designer called his collection a "personal diary" of people who continue to inspire him and open his mind to "different ways of seeing and thinking." Along with Wachowski, Jacobs revealed the people photographed for his campaign ad are unique individuals who embody the beauty and spirit of equality.
A photo of Jacobs and Wachowski at during designer's show in New York City in September is posted by Mail Online. The pair looked happy as they hugged each other for the camera.
According to Mail Online, Wachowski continued to live as Larry up until 2002. She reportedly came out as a transgender by 2012. Before modelling for Jacobs, she gained recognition for her works in two of the most popular films in the 1990s including "V for Vendetta" and "The Matrix."
