BREAKING: El Chapo Caught After Shootout
Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán was captured by Mexican forces on Jan. 8.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto took to Twitter to announce the arrest, which marred his administration's record on fighting drug cartels.
“Mission accomplished: we have it,” he wrote in Spanish, “I want to inform the Mexican people that Joaquín Guzmán Loera has been arrested.” Guzmán, who escaped from a maximum security prison of Altiplano last year for the second time, has a reputation of being impossible to keep behind bars. The Presidential Twitter account continued to congratulate the government forces for the capture of the drug cartel leader.
"The President recognizes the work of the Security Cabinet of the Mexican government for this important victory for the rule of law," the tweet reads.
News outlets report El Chapo was captured by Mexican marines following a shootout in the city of Los Mochis in Sinaloa, a Mexican navy press release stated. Five assailants died while on Mexican marine was wounded.
As previously reported, Antonio Vazquez, Mexico's self-proclaimed Grand Warlock, recently used Tarot cards to predict El Chapo’s fate.
Vazquez said the authorities would hunt down El Chapo, but rather than bring him back to prison they would simply kill him.
