'The Homesman' Trailer: Tommy Lee Jones Recruits Hilary Swank, Meryl Streep & More for Cannes Film Festival 2014 [WATCH]
Tommy Lee Jones played Meryl Streep's husband in Hope Springs, and now Streep and Jones have teamed up again for Jones' second time directing film, The Homesman.
The Cannes Film Festival, held on May 14-25, is an assemblage of the best and the brightest in the film world. Jones' film The Homesman, set in the Old West, will be featured at the 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival. It is getting great buzz, and in addition to Streep, Jones has also wrangled some other A-list celebrities which perhaps elevates interest in the film. Alongside Streep and Jones, there is Hilary Swank, Miranda Otto, John Lithgow, James Spader and Hailee Steinfeld.
Jones not only directed this film, but he co-wrote and produced it too, Entertainment Weekly reported. Back in 2005, Jones also directed The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada; he won a Best Actor award at Cannes. The film mostly vanished after that, however, The Wire reported.
The Homesman is among 49 films selected for Cannes. Those films feature 15 female directors and five first-time directors. The Homesman will be in the most prestigious category at Cannes, known as the "Main Competition." It will battle it out with 18 other films, including Foxcatcher, starring Channing Tatum and Steve Carell, The Wrap reported. Here is a complete list of the films and categories.
The Homesman is about a pioneer woman, played by Swank, who saves Jones' character who believes he must help her transport three insane women from Nebraska to Iowa. The three women are played by Steinfeld, Otto, and Grace Gummer.
"Three crazy women for five weeks is a lot more than I bargained for," Jones mutters in the movie's trailer. "But it beats a hanging, doesn't it?"
The Times also names The Homesman as one of five films to look forward to at this years Cannes. The other four films are Foxcatcher; Lost River, starring Eva Mendes and Doctor Who's Matt Smith and directed by Ryan Gosling, The Search, and Two Days, One Night.
For Jones' second feature film, he is perhaps off to a great start.
