‘Machete’ Star Danny Trejo Launches Vegan Taco Restaurant in Los Angeles
Hollywood actor Danny Trejo, who is known for his roles in "Machete" movie franchises and "From Dusk Till Dawn," is now a certified restaurateur after he launched Trejo's Tacos, the actor's vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurant in Los Angeles. Trejo said the restaurant came as a joint venture with film producers Ash Shah and Jeff Georgino.
Trejo has been known as a Hollywood actor portraying hyper-masculine characters, villains and anti-heroes. And he was most recognized for his badass character in "Machete" films. He has also appeared in several hit TV series like "Breaking Bad," "The X-Files" and "Sons of Anarchy." But today, the 71-year-old Mexican-American actor will not be beating some good guys onscreen instead, fans will see him get in action at his restaurant, which is located at 1048 La Brea Avenue near Olympic Boulevard in L.A., Los Angeles Times noted.
While Trejo's Tacos is yet to open, Trejo and his co-owners planned to have a soft opening early week. And after a week, the restaurant will officially open with expanded hours and an expanded menu, which will be designed by Daniel Mattern of Cook's County.
Trejo has also revealed the reason why he ventured into the restaurant business.
"This was a dream of my mom's really... we kind of just put it together," Trejo said.
As for the food Trejo's restaurant will serve, the actor assured that everything on their menu will be served fresh and leftover food for the day will not be kept overnight because it will be donated to a homeless shelter in the area, Inquisitr reported.
At Trejo's Tacos, visitors can enjoy 10 different tacos, which are vegan and vegetarian-friendly as well as gluten-free. And included in their menu are the black pepper tofu taco with Serrano chiles and the Austin-style fried avocado taco with refried Rancho Gordo black beans. For the drinks, the restaurant is offering a list of seasonal aguas frescas, housemade date-sweetened horchata and kombucha on tap. Also available is Trejo's own Cerveca, which is brewed in the Arts District downtown.
"Here, we wanted to include everybody, so we have a great vegan menu and gluten-free menu," Trejo said. While Shah added, "We try to be as vegan and vegetarian-friendly as possible, considering it's such a big movement now."
Aside from Trejo's Tacos, Danny Trejo also has a booming beverage empire, thanks to the bags of Trejo's coffee, a South American blend roasted locally by Zona Rosa Coffee in Pasadena, behind the counter of his new restaurant. His team is also working on Trejo's very own ice cream sandwiches.
Meanwhile, the restaurant is designed by Spacecraft Design Group's Kristofer Keith. While the place is surrounded by artworks of local artist Ernesto Yerena. One of the pieces of art shows Trejo. The restaurant is also hard to miss, as the logo features Trejo's face.
Despite laying low in the entertainment industry, Danny Trejo is surely making a name in the food and beverage business. In fact, he is growing his restaurant empire with plans to open a second location in Hollywood.
