The DC Extended Universes continues expanding with another Hollywood actress in talks of joining the roster: Amber Heard. The "Magic Mike XXL" star is reportedly in negotiations for the Aquaman lead female role, according to a report from the Hollywood Reporter.

If cast, Heard will take on the role of Mera, the love interest of Aquaman and queen of Atlantis. The character, whose powers include controlling water, was introduced back in 1963. She will play opposite Jason Momoa, who has long been cast as the titular character of the DC franchise.

Although Mera is primarily part of the "Aquaman" film, the character will hit the screen first as part of the collection of superheroes in "Justice League". In this large-scale DC movie, a number of characters and stories will be present including Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Aquaman, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and more.

"Aquaman" is helmed by director James Wan while two separate screenplays are being developed penned by David Leslie Johnson and Kurt Johnstad.

Not much have been officially revealed about the "Aquaman" solo movie, but the DC community has been buzzing about the various characters that might get screen time on the upcoming film. According to a report from JoBlo, the film might not feature Black Manta but Aquaman's half-brother Ocean Master. Still, there is plenty of time left to shake things up in the franchise.

In an interview with Collider back in November, producer Charles Roven talked about the development of the film.

"We're very early days," he explained. "We're just starting with the screenplay. He's [Wan] making 'The Conjuring 2'  now, so he's had his hand in the creation of let's just call it a working document from which to write. But he's directing that film [and] he's got his hand ever so slightly in the development, but he's really gonna throw himself into it after he finishes shooting' Conjuring 2.' And we're planning on it being his film after 'Conjuring 2.' He is a serious Aquaman fan."

In the bigger world of "Justice League," another major villain is expected to play a role: Doomsday. Although the famously tight-lipped director Zack Snyder didn't elaborate, he did hint at the antagonist's presence in the film in an interview with Daily Beast saying, "Well, you have Doomsday, right? He doesn't just crawl out of the ground. He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored."

"Justice League" will begin shooting in April and set to hit theaters on Nov. 17, 2017. "Aquaman" will follow with its release on Jul. 27, 2018.
