Kate del Castillo Breaks Silence on 'El Chapo'
After days of silence, actress Kate del Castillo has finally spoken out about the controversy surrounding her reported meeting with Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.
The Mexican-American actress took to Twitter on Jan. 13 to thank fans for their support. She also offered vague insight into the rumors surrounding her relationship with the famous drug lord.
"Thank you for your support over the past days. Not surprisingly, many have chosen to make up items they think will make good stories and that aren't truthful. I look forward to sharing my story with you. Kate del Castillo," she tweeted.
Del Castillo has been the subject of much speculation since it was reported that she has had a friendship with the cartel leader for quite some time and was aware of his location while he was on the run.
According to Univision, the actress helped arrange a meeting between herself, Guzmán and actor Sean Penn, who has also been the subject of much discussion and debate since his Rolling Stones interview with Guzmán was revealed.
The interview was conducted while Guzmán was in hiding and was published on Jan. 10, just two days after the drug lord was captured by the Mexican Navy on Jan. 8.
On Jan. 13, Mexican newspaper Milenio released alleged text messages between del Castillo and Guzmán that revealed the drug lord's excitement to meet the actress. The text messages indicate that del Castillo wanted to discuss a secret project and reveal the moment that Guzmán was informed that Penn wanted to meet him as well.
The actress first made headlines back in 2012 when she posted an open letter that revealed that she believed in "El Chapo" more than she did in the government, which elicited support from many but criticism from others.
