Sony pulls ahead in the race of the video game consoles as their PlayStation 4 outsold Xbox One in December, as well as raking in the bigger sales numbers for the entire 2015, according to Geek Wire.

The news outlet said that both Sony and Microsoft marked record-breaking figures during the holiday season. The NPD Group revealed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One unit sales in the U.S. hit the highest ever numbers for each in December, adding that the combined sales of the consoles are higher than the combined numbers of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 over 26 months.

Between the two, Sony outpaced their rival in sales since both current generation consoles were launched in 2013. It has now sold 35.9 million PlayStation 4 units since its debut. The numbers of last December also favored PlayStation.

Sony confirmed the news and expressed the group's gratitude in a statement in Geek Wire.

"As we reflect on an amazing year, we want to thank fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top selling console in December and in 2015," a spokesperson from the company said. "PS4 also had the strongest third-party software sales in 2015 in the U.S., according to NPD."

Corporate Vice President of Xbox Marketing Mike Nichols similarly issued a statement saying, "Thanks to our fans, continued support for the most critically-acclaimed holiday lineup of exclusives in Xbox history made December 2015 the best month yet for Xbox Live global engagement and Xbox One sales in the U.S."

The Microsoft executive added that the hours spent on Xbox One almost doubled worldwide throughout the year, while console's exclusive game sales in the U.S. in the second half of 2015 doubled in the same time frame the year before. The holiday sale also broke records with its growth over the years, prompting Nichols to call Xbox One as "the best place for gamers and the only console that has all top 10 best-selling titles of this generation that launched in 2015."

Both Sony and Microsoft closed landmark years in development and sales, and the two companies are eager to keep the ball rolling in 2016, as expressed in their respective statements.

According to a report from Game Spot, Nintendo's statement on the latest NPD report did not focus on the console race, but instead "Super Mario Maker", which was able to hit the one million U.S. sales in December. It is reportedly only the sixth game to achieve this milestone on Wii U.
