NBA Standings: San Antonio Spurs Defeat Cleveland Cavaliers, Continue Fight for First Place
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in one of the most thrilling games of the NBA season on Thursday night, 99-95.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead to win the first half, 32-20. The Spurs have been great all year long, but some fans have criticized them for not beating top competition. That was all about to change. The Spurs dramatically turned things around, winning each of the next three quarters and eventually the game.
Kawhi Leonard was fantastic with 20 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds for the silver and black. Tony Parker was the 'player of the game' scoring a team-leading 24 points for the Spurs in 35 minutes. Parker outplayed star point guard Kyrie Irving, defending him one-on-one very well. The Spurs were outscored from the perimeter, 10-5, and Danny Green is still not shooting very well from the outside. regardless, the Spurs are even better in the paint this season. The additions of LaMarcus Aldridge and David West have proven to be very wise decisions by the Spurs front office.
With that win, the Spurs improved their overall record to 35-6. Gregg Popovich's squad is an incredible 23-0 at home this season, and they are currently riding a 10-game win streak. The Golden State Warriors are still atop the Western Conference standings with a 37-3 mark. The Warriors are also undefeated at home, 19-0.
The Spurs and Warriors will face each other for the first time on Jan. 25.
As for the Cavaliers, they are still in first place in the Eastern Conference despite the loss. LeBron James and the Cavaliers dropped to 27-10, now holding a three and a half game lead over the second place Toronto Raptors. A James-led team has won the East the last five consecutive seasons. We could very well see a Cavaliers vs. Warriors or Spurs finals rematch this upcoming season.
