Exclusive: Jeb Bush Super PAC Co-Founder Andrea Wong Speaks Up on Why 'Vamos for Jeb' Was Closed
The pro-Bush super PAC "Vamos for Jeb," started by founders Claire Hardwick and Andrea Wong, recently announced that it was halting its operations.
There were circulating reports saying that the reason the pro-Jeb Bush super PAC shut down was due to the trailing of the Bush campaign in the polls.
However, in a statement sent by Wong herself, she clarified that the real reason she and her partner shut down "Vamos for Jeb" was rather personal.
In the email she said, "The decision to close Vamos for Jeb 2016 was solely due to personal priorities taking precedence. Claire Hardwick wants to devote her efforts to her media company, Elephant News, and I will be beginning culinary school."
Andrea Wong, who is an American with Nicaraguan background, started the super PAC with a firm belief that Jeb Bush has a significant amount of support among Latin American voters and thinks that he is the only GOP candidate that can really beat Hillary Clinton in the general election.
She and her partner maintain their belief that if any candidate other than Jeb receives the Republican nomination, most, if not all Latinos, will give their votes to the Democrats.
The reason for this is, despite being Republican, which is usually associated to being "conservative" and "anti-immigration," Jeb Bush is widely seen as moderate on many social issues, specifically on the very hot subject of immigration.
When asked why she and Claire chose to support Jeb, she stated that she chose him as their candidate because of his support and understanding of the Latino community. And regarding the issue of immigration, Wong said that Jeb is a dedicated leader and the only candidate who proposed a path for legal immigration while also inducing economic growth.
Moreover, Wong maintained her stance that Jeb has a "loyal base of supporters" among the Hispanic community, especially in Florida where they witnessed him do a great job as the governor.
Following the unfortunate closing of "Vamos for Jeb," Wong reiterated that as of now, she does not have any plans involving the presidential elections.
On the other hand, Hardwick will still be covering the elections through her website, Elephant News. Wong believes that Hardwick will still discuss topics relevant to Latinos due to the fact that Donald Trump's platform regarding the Latino community has received opposing views.
Lastly, she said that Jeb's type of leadership is the one America needs and one that can resolve and create opportunities, especially for the Hispanic and Latino Americans.
